So when you're weighing two units against each other, think about reliability before you think about raw power, because a steady modest pulse beats a strong intermittent one every day of the week.

Volts, Joules, and the Mileage Number You Should Ignore

Horses are actually one of the easier animals to fence. Compared to sheep or goats, or cattle for that matter, they've got thin skin and not much coat on them for most of the year, and they're quick learners on top of it. So you need less voltage than people tend to think. Keep the line somewhere between 5,000 and 10, 000 volts, and you're fine. If you want one number to work to, make it 8,000.

When would you want more power than the minimum? A few situations come up over and over. Long fence lines, for one, because the charge fades as it travels, and what leaves the energizer at 5,000 volts might arrive at the far corner with barely 3,000 left. 

Weedy paddocks are another, since every bit of grass touching the line quietly siphons voltage off, and no paddock stays clean through a wet summer. And then there's winter. A pony in its full coat is wrapped in insulation, so the pulse that got its attention back in July needs a bit more behind it to make the same impression in January.

Shod horses, on the other hand, make your job easier. Steel shoes ground so well that the horse feels every bit of the pulse, which is part of why they learn a hot fence within a day or two.

As for comparing units, ignore the mileage on the box and look at joules. Mileage figures come from a laboratory fence with one clean strand and perfect ground, nothing like a working paddock. Voltage is the push, joules are the fuel behind it, and a solid joule rating is what holds your voltage to the far corner where the pony is standing.

Mains, Battery, or Solar?

There are three ways to power an energizer, and where your paddock sits usually makes the decision for you.Mains-powered units are the old standby when the fence runs close to a building. The catch is they need shelter, a stable or a shed, because most are only splash-proof, and once it's wired in, your fence is stuck wherever the socket is.

Battery-powered units free you from the outlet but bring their own chore, because, depending on the unit, batteries need replacing or recharging on a schedule measured in weeks, and you'll want a spare on hand to cover downtime. Batteries are also heavy to Carry.

For paddock work, solar gets rid of both headaches. Daylight is enough to keep the battery topped up; you don't need the panel sitting in full sun all day, and once it's up, the fence just stays live.

Day, night, doesn't matter. Moving your fencing? The energizer comes with it; that's the whole point. We'd tell most horse and pony owners to go solar, especially anyone whose paddocks sit a fair walk from the yard, anyone strip grazing, and anyone who shuffles their turnout around as the seasons change. Electric Fence Height and Strand Spacing for Horses and Ponies

 

 

Fence height should be set off the animals in the paddock, and the working rule among horse people is to run the top strand at wither height or above for the tallest animal turned out. In practice, that means roughly 5 feet for most horses. Add another 6 inches for known jumpers and the taller warmblood breeds, since a horse that has cleared 5 feet under saddle will not be impressed by 5 feet of tape in the field.

Ponies change the maths. Their top strand only needs to sit at 4 to 4.5 feet, and frankly the top strand is rarely the problem with ponies anyway. Pony escapes happen at the bottom of the fence. They go under, not over.

If the lowest strand sits too high off the ground, or the gap between the bottom two strands is generous, a pony will find it, and once a pony has found a way out, it will use it daily. Set the lower strands closer together than you would for horses and bring the bottom one down near the ground.

Strand count depends on who you keep. Mares and geldings are reliably held behind three strands, and for most private yards that's the standard setup. Stallions are a different proposition. 

Any stud fencing worth the name runs four or five strands, because a stallion tests boundaries as part of his normal behavior, more so with mares anywhere on the property, and the cost of two extra strands is nothing against a loose stallion. Young colts fall under the same rule for the same reason. 

Running horses and ponies together means the fence has to work for both. Put the top strand at horse height. Then space the lower strands for the ponies, closer together and lower down than you would for horses alone. It's a bit more wire, but it saves you fencing the paddock twice.

Foals need more thought than an extra strand. A newborn is unsteady on its legs, drops to sleep wherever it likes, and can roll right under a low line of tape, so a nursery paddock is better served by proper physical fencing with tight spacing while the foal is small. Electric earns its place a little later, once the foal is steady and confident, when a well-placed strand of wide, visible tape teaches respect for fencing early and gently. By the time that youngster is a strong yearling, the lesson is already in place, which is exactly when you want it there.

 


Polytape Visibility and Fence Earthing: Two Steps Most Owners Miss

Plenty of yards have a perfectly good energizer hanging on the fence post and a fence that still doesn't do its job, and when that happens, the fault usually sits in one of two places: the conductor or the earth.

Start with what the horse can actually see.Horses struggle to see thin wire from a distance, and their instinct when frightened is to bolt first and look later. Put those two things together and a spooked horse can run straight into a fence it never knew was there.

That's why wide, brightly colored polywire beats thin steel wire for horses. When a horse can see the fence clearly from the other side of the paddock, it remembers exactly where the shock came from and steers clear of it.

Owners with board or vinyl fencing already in place can get the same benefit by running one hot strand of tape along the top rail, which tends to end the leaning, cribbing, and chewing in short order. Then there's the earthing, which is the bit everyone forgets about. The shock doesn't end at the pony. It has to go through the animal, into the ground, along to the earthing rod and back to the energizer to complete the circuit.

Any weak point on that trip back and the horse feels less at the fence. We've seen it plenty of times: a decent energizer giving a feeble little tickle, and it turns out the rod's been knocked into a few inches of dry sandy ground next to the gate. The energizer was never the problem.

 

Get the rod deep into soil that holds some moisture, keep it well away from any building or utility earth, and on dry sandy ground either hunt out the dampest low spot on the property or give the area around the rod some water when the weather turns parched. And any time the fence seems weak, look at the earth before you suspect the energizer, because far more often than not, that's where the problem lives.

How to Introduce Horses and Ponies to an Electric Fence

Introducing a horse to electric fencing for the first time is a job in itself, and it's worth doing properly rather than turning the animal out into a hot paddock and leaving it to find the fence on its own.

A horse that first meets the tape mid-spook, at speed, can go straight through it and learn nothing useful. Pick a bright day when the tape shows up well, and do the introduction somewhere enclosed, ideally a smaller pen or a paddock within your perimeter fencing, so that if the first touch produces a startle and a bolt, the horse has nowhere to go but back to grazing.

Setting a little hay a few feet back from the line helps too, since an animal drifting over to eat approaches the fence at a walk rather than discovering it at a canter. From there, your job is mostly to watch. 

One touch, sometimes a second, and the average horse has learned everything it needs to know about that fence for the rest of its life. Ponies can be another matter, and some will come back for a second or even third opinion before accepting the verdict, which is exactly why the pulse has to be waiting for them, dependably, every single time they test it.

 

FAQs: How to Choose the Best Energizer for Horse and Pony Paddocks

Is electric fencing safe for horses and ponies?

Yes, provided it's put up properly. The shock is over in a fraction of a second; it stings, and that's it- no injury, no lasting effect. Horses do terrible things to themselves in plain wire and stock fencing when they panic or get a leg through, and wire injuries are some of the nastiest a horse can pick up in the field. Against that, a brief sting that teaches the horse to stay clear is easily the kinder option.

What size energizer do I need?

Work from your fence rather than your head count. If you're running a normal paddock with a few strands, the 0.25 joule MAC3ML has all the capacity you'll use. Once the lines get longer, the strands multiply, or you're linking paddocks together, that's when the 0.5 joule MAC6ML makes sense. And for a small single paddock or a temporary strip with hardly any wire on it, the Mini MAC2ML is enough.

Can one energizer power several paddocks?

Yes, lots of people run their whole place off one unit. You need two things for it to work. The energizer's joule rating has to cover all the wire added together, every strand in every connected paddock, and you want insulated lead-out cable between the sections rather than trying to bridge them with fence wire.

The thing that catches people out is how quickly the total climbs. Three modest paddocks with a few strands each is suddenly a lot of fence, and that's usually the point where the half-joule unit goes from sounding like too much to being exactly what you need.

Does the fence stay hot at night and in cloudy weather?

Yes on both counts. Daylight charges the lithium battery, the battery runs the fence around the clock, and there's up to 15 days of reserve for when the sun goes missing entirely.

How many volts for horses and ponies?
